Stovetop Mulled Apple Cider

Fresh apple cider simmered low with whole spices, orange and ginger. Makes the whole house smell like fall.

Don’t let it boil: boiling dulls the cider and turns the spices bitter. Keep it warm on the lowest setting for a party, or cool, refrigerate and reheat within 5 days.

Method

  1. Pour the cider into a large pot. Add the orange rounds, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, star anise and ginger.

  2. Bring just to a simmer over medium heat, then turn the heat to low.

  3. Keep it barely steaming, without boiling, for so the spices infuse.

  4. Taste and stir in maple syrup if your cider is tart.

  5. Strain into mugs and serve hot, each with a cinnamon stick.
